Tapioca biriyani is a whole meal dish which is more common in central Kerala. In Kerala, it is also called Kappa Biriyani. Spicy beef masala is cooked with tapioca and flavoured with roasted coconut. Wholesome and healthy tapioca biriyani is unique and interesting with cooked tapioca blended with spicy beef curry. You can easily prepare this dish at home with limited ingredients. Tender beef tastes best. Beef should be cooked well so it gets well blended with mashed tapioca. The spicy aromatic dish is full of flavors. Tapioca with beef tastes heavenly. This is a must try delicacy in Kerala Cuisine with spicy delightful flavors. This is a wholesome meal, an all time favorite with non-vegetarians in Kerala. The dish is quite popular in middle Kerala. All regions in Kerala have their own distinct style of preparation. Each region wise dish is unique and special with their own Kappa Biriyani dish.

This is an extremely flavorful and tempting dish that will satiate your taste buds. This comfort food can be consumed at any time of the day be it lunch, or dinner, anytime….

For this recipe, you will need….

 

Ingredients

  • ½ kg Beef (cut into medium size pieces)
  • 1 Onion
  • One tbsp. each Crushed ginger & garlic
  • A tbsp. Chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp. Coriander powder
  • ½ tsp. Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp. Pepper powder
  • 1 tsp. Garam Masala
  • 2 tsps. Vinegar
  • ½ kg Kappa (cassava)
  • 1 cup Grated coconut
  • 1 tsp. Chilli powder
  • 1 tsp. Coriander powder
  • 5 -6 Small / Pearl onions
  • 1 tsp. Mustard seeds
  • Salt
  • Oil – I used coconut oil
  • Curry leaves

 

Method

  • Cook tapioca with salt till it becomes soft. Mash tapioca & keep it aside.
  • Marinate the cleaned beef with onion, ginger, garlic, masala powders, vinegar & salt. Cook the marinated beef till it becomes tender. Add the mashed tapioca to beef & mix well.
  • Meanwhile fry scraped coconut with chilli powder & coriander powder till it becomes golden brown (keep aside 2 tsp of coconut for garnishing). Grind it. Add ground coconut mix to beef & tapioca & mix well.
  • Heat oil in a pan & splutter mustard seeds. Add small onion & saute for 3-4 minutes. Add beef tapioca mix & stir for 4-5 minutes. Garnish with curry leaves & fried coconut.
  • Serve tapioca biriyani hot….yummy…
